Honor Roll: Which Artificial Intelligence Services Pass as Most Customer Ready?

Updated: Jun 6

Like many, I've been trying more artificial intelligence services. However, when I shell out for these subscription services, I want to be sure it'll be worth it and that I'm not just funding a fickle engineer's side project. With that, I've delved in and graded some rapidly evolving AI service categories to highlight some that may be worthy of your consideration.

Top 3 Personal Service Categories

  1. Home Automation (A-): During the past several years we've seen a continuous evolution of AI-powered smart home devices such as thermostats, lights, security cameras, and voice assistants. These services can enhance comfort, convenience, and security. They learn your behaviors and adjust settings accordingly to improve energy efficiency and personalization. These services are dominated by the big tech titans like Amazon, Google, and Apple. Going forward, I expect different tiers of these services will emerge with the premium AI service offerings being exclusive to paid subscription users (e.g. Prime or Apple One). To take better advantage of these services you might need to upgrade your hardware. The choice you need to make is whether to diversify across ecosystems or go "all in" on one.

  2. Personal Finance Management (B+): AI tools can help consumers manage their finances more effectively. This includes budgeting apps that analyze spending habits, investment apps that provide personalized advice, and fraud detection systems that alert users to suspicious activity.

  3. Health and Fitness (B): AI applications in personal health include wearable devices that track physical activity and provide health insights based on data analysis. Other innovations include apps for dietary recommendations, sleep analysis, and personalized workout plans.

Top 3 Professional Service Categories

  1. Natural Language Generation (A): I see this as one of the most advanced AI services available today. Is it perfect, no (notice the absense of a "+" after the assigned grade). These services are stage ready for an array of applications, from writing marketing copy, to translating text from one language to another, to responding to customers' inquiries through an automated chat services. While many of these services are available for free (e.g. ChatGPT 3.5), in my experience upgrading to a premium paid version is often worth it.

  2. Image Generation (A-): This is one of the most rapidly developing AI professional service categories. Harnessing the power of AI to generate creative content for ads and social posts, to creating stunning presentation can reduce previously onerous task by hours, and often with a better end product. Here too, premium subscription tiers are usually a good bang for your buck.

  3. Job Application Services (B-): We all know that finding a new job is a numbers game. Filling out lengthy only job applications can take up to 30 minutes per application. There has been a recent proliferation of AI services that automate this process and enable job seekers to play the numbers game more effectively. Some of these services will apply to 50 or more jobs per week that match the job seekers preferences. That said, these services are still far from perfect. The algorithms can often go awry, applying for jobs that do not align to job seekers' preferences or qualification.

What services do you think should be inclued on the honor roll? As I try more I will keep you informed with updates on the blog.
