If you're like me, you're simultaneously intrigued, scared, and all around confused about AI. I've started to embrace this new technology and I see its potential transformative power to improve my life. Like most things in life, not all services are created equal. I've started to create a criterial for selecting AI services:
(1) How "smart" is it? We have to remember that AI is almost as new to developers who are harnessing it to create new services. Some do it better than others. When I look for a new AI service I prioritize brands that offer a free trial or a low cost entry option. I want to take it for a test drive before I shell out for a premium service.
(2) How much involvement does it need from me? Some AI services need regular feedback to improve its ability to customize to best meet your needs. Others operate more independently. While one is not necessarily better than the other, you need to understand how much you will need to be involved to receive the best benefit from the service.
(3) How strict is the service's privacy policy? New technology invites a lot of new players (e.g. start ups) that are not as sophisticated in terms of their data security and privacy protections. Alternatively, some of the large tech players, while more sophisticated in privacy protections, have a motivation to monetize each customer across all their broader line of service, including advertising. It's important to understand these risks and perhaps even use different profiles and passwords to mitigate these risks.
If you're new to using AI services (aren't we all?) then it's probably best to try just a few at a time and see which ones perform the best and actively monitor them to ensure you're getting the best value for your money before switching them into set it and forget it mode, like many of us regrettably do with all our streaming subscription services.
